The process of building a deck or a fence is a somewhat straightforward and linear process, and can be completed fairly quickly and efficiently by an experienced decking contractor. At American Fence & Deck, we have built countless decks for clients and have mastered the process from beginning to end.
From our experience, we have found that the project goes smoother and allows for better communication, when the client has an understanding of the steps involved in the building process. In order to facilitate that understanding, the process of building a deck is outlined below:

INITIAL PHONE CALL – WEB FORM
Planning your project starts by selecting the right fence & deck contractor and determine exactly what type of fence & deck you want to have for your home. After you have contacted us either over the phone or filled out our form, we will arrange an initial IN HOME CONSULTATION to review your project goals, including design ideas and material options. The consultations typically takes about an hour or less.
INITIAL MEETING – HOME CONSULTATION
American Fence-Deck will schedule a site visit with you, after following your request completion and initial contact. This site visit helps us to begin the next steps of the process by meeting with you and evaluating the project site in person. During the initial consultation, our team will visit your site and conduct a walk through with you to help refine and determine what you want and need in your new home project.
DESIGN & SELECTION – PROPOSAL
We will use the information collected during the consultation to draw ready for permit plans if necessary, as well as a detailed project proposal, schedule of completion and/or secure fence walkthrough permits. This process usually takes about a week. Depending on your municipality, you will more than likely need a construction permit before starting the project. We will handle the necessary permits. At this phase, we will go over the selection of materials for your posts, fence and/or deck, railing and deck flooring.
When all the details have been finalized, you will send us the signed proposal, along with a down payment. Your project will be added to our schedule, and you’ll receive regular updates on our progress from this point forward. Depending upon the complexity of your project, this process can be shortened within the same day.
PREPARATION- BUILD PHASE
Preparing the site for your fence or deck involves a variety of steps, starting with purchasing materials at the appropriate time and to stay on schedule.
BUILD PHASE
1. Setting the Footings.
2. Installing Ledger Board (decks).
3. Installing Support Posts.
4. Attaching the beams.
5. Installing the joists (boards for fences).
6. Nailing decking boards.
7. Trimming the decking.
8. Installing additional features such as railing, stairs, and staining.
After the completion of the deck, we will review with you to your complete satisfaction and all that is left is to add is the furniture. While the steps to building a fence and/or a deck are simple, the execution is sometimes anything but simple. A good contractor with extensive deck building experience has mastered these steps and as such is able to complete them in a timely and efficient manner.
